Upway / Rio de Janeiro

The landscape topography refelects the social inequality in Rio de Janeiro. Favelas, homes to the socially disadvantaged, are located on the hillsides around the city. The privileged, on the other hand, reside and work along the coast and in the city lowlands. The hillside favelas are difficult to access due to topography and the dense structure of these communities. A persons prosperity is also influenced by his/her access to mobility and ability to circulate freely around the city. The Upway is a collective and continuous transportation system that connects neighborhoods across hills and integrates all social classes.
