Mobility Hubs Oberbillwerder
In the planning of the new Oberbillwerder district, great importance is placed on ensuring that street space and other valuable areas are not lost to parked vehicles. So-called Mobility Hubs are intended to reorganize stationary traffic while simultaneously creating spaces for neighborhood interaction.
The aim of the concept study is to develop an economically and socially viable model for all Mobility Hubs by engaging early and intensively with questions of sustainable building structures, neighborhood mobility, and economically efficient operations.
The key challenge lies in the integrated design of forward-thinking mobility solutions. The Mobility Hub is being explored as a place for “transfer” – connecting regional to local transportation via various modes of mobility. It is also envisioned as a place of “encounter” – offering high-quality public space and a variety of services. Lastly, the Mobility Hub is developed as a place for “rethinking” – to inspire new, sustainable approaches to transportation and community behavior.

Studio Schwitalla carried out foundational work on spatial concepts, developed design principles, and addressed fire safety challenges associated with timber construction in parking structures. The work provided the basis for the subsequent architectural competition.
